PennDOT has begun work an $8 million project to improve travel on a section of Interstate 83 known as the York split.

Construction crews on Friday began work on a temporary roadway that will eventually lead to a temporary bridge to be built over I-83 just north of the Lowther Street bridge in Lemoyne.

Once traffic is moved to the temporary bridge, the existing bridge will be demolished and a new bridge will be built over the interstate.

According to PennDOT, the existing bridge is a major contributing factor to the bottleneck on I-83 North approaching Harrisburg and Route 581 West. The interstate cannot be widened until the bridge is removed.

The new two-span bridge will be large enough to accommodate four lanes of I-83 as well as three ramps underneath.

The project is expected to be completed by the end of May 2013.

During the construction, I-83 traffic will be detoured on four weekends. The dates have not been scheduled.

Drivers on Lowther Street should expect a traffic shift and single-lane restrictions in each direction for the next several weeks.

The York split is a real mess at times. Hopefully this project will fix the problems and be completed on schedule

I predict it won't be finished until 2015.

I hope that does not happen. I think the workers will hit the ground running and bring the job in on time

I take that as your confidence is low on Pennsylvania workers

I don't know what they're doing, but people have made whole careers out of that project.

It looks like 10 months so far
July 27, 2011
PennDOT announced today that construction crews will begin construction work on a section of Interstate 83 north between exit 40-A/Limekiln Road and the bridge over the Yellow Breeches Creek in Fairview Township, York County. The construction, weather permitting, is expected to begin on Friday, July 29 at 9 p.m.

PennDOT notes that motorists traveling I-83 north will encounter around-the-clock single-lane traffic restrictions from Friday to 6 a.m. Monday, Aug. 1.

The work, which is weather sensitive, was originally scheduled for the weekend of July 22 but was canceled due to the chance of severe weekend thunderstorms.

The work is part of an overall $11 million construction contract awarded to Trumbull Corporation of Pittsburgh that includes full-depth highway reconstruction on mainline I-83, bridge deck replacement on the I-83 bridges over the Pennsylvania Turnpike and over the exit 39-B on- and off-ramps, ramp surfacing, guiderail and sign installation and new traffic lines.

The overall project is scheduled for completion by the end of November 2012, however PennDOT said they anticipate it will end ahead of schedule.

Your article does not state when the overall project began.

I think that project was supposed to have been completed May 2012 and is now slated for May 2013. I go through there twice per day so I have been keeping an eye on the project updates. I could have misread the 2012 completion date initially, but I really don't think so. I can't wait for this to get done.

I go thru twice a day as well. I work up on the State Hospital grounds. And the change in ramps is REALLY getting old.

They work on the 83 split project from 8 till 10, then they go to Limekiln from 11 to 1. take a lunch break for an hour, then go to Wade Bridge project from 2 to 4, then get an hour for clean up. there's your 8 hours people. With all the Obama cut backs this is the NEW WORK SCHEDULES.

This is all rather amusing because it hauls up memories as far back as when I was pre-teen ( and that was a bunch of years ago) that caused me to form an opinion of Harrisburg that it is ALWAYS under perpetual road construction.

You'd think they would get it right some day, after all these years. I guess some things NEVER change. :?

It amaizes me how little the general public knows about construction projects in this state. PennDOT does not do large construction projects. Their are contractors out there working. Not PennDOT crews.Look at the logo's on the trucks. And with the weather we have had this winter I would guess they are ahead of schedule on the Limekiln Rd area project. The contracts are written so there are bonuses for finishing early and penalties for finishing late.

It would have taken hundreds of years to originally build 83 if they had worked at the rate they're working at Limekiln.
