Surprising facts behind revived gun control debate
By DONALD GILLILAND, The Patriot-News The Patriot-News

In the wake of the elementary school shooting in Connecticut discussion of gun control has risen to a new pitch, but homicide by gun is actually on the decline in the United States.

So too, the number of people who tell Gallup pollsters they support stricter laws covering the sale of firearms.

According to the most recent FBI uniform crime reports, murder in the United States has been on the decline for at least six years, including the number of people killed by guns.

Both the raw number of people killed and the murder rate per 100,000 people have been ticking steadily downward for more than half a decade.

According to the FBI statistics, there were 1,642 fewer people murdered with a gun last year than in 2006, a 16 percent drop.

Ironically, according to figures collected by the Associated Press, the number of licensed gun dealers in the United States actually increased — from 47,509 to 50,812 — under the Obama administration, after a long, steady decline since the early 1990s.

The percentage of total murders committed with a gun has remained fairly constant, around 67 percent, and of those, the preferred type of gun — the handgun — has remained fairly constant, around 70 percent of all gun murders.

According to the Associated Press, public opinion in favor of stricter gun laws is at a 20-year low in the United States.

Only 43 percent of Americans supported stricter gun laws in an October 2011 Gallup poll, compared to 78 percent in a September 1990 poll.

According to an Associated Press compilation of Gallup polls on the issue, over the past 20 years, public support for stricter gun laws has been trending downward, with small upticks in 1999 following the Columbine school shooting and again between 2002 and 2004.

Nevertheless, in light of the Connecticut shooting, many have begun calling for new laws.

Former Gov. Ed Rendell, tweeted Friday afternoon that it’s “Time for Washington to stop being wusses and put sensible controls on firearms.”

New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg and others were part of the chorus.

Pennsylvania’s federal politicians — notably senators Robert Casey, Jr. and Pat Toomey — refrained from weighing in, limiting their response instead to condolences for the victims of the shooting.

Given the 20-year-old shooter apparently used his mother’s legally registered guns, it’s unclear what kind of laws would have prevented the tragedy, short of a total ban on guns similar to Japan’s.

Even among people who have been touched by mass shootings like the one in Connecticut, opinion is far from uniform.

Tom Mauser, who became a gun control advocate after his son Daniel was killed at Columbine, urged officials to stop playing defense on gun control.

Sean Graves, a student was wounded at Columbine, said he was disgusted by the shootings in Connecticut but he didn’t believe laws can prevent such violence.

If people “want to find a way to harm people, they’re going to find a way to do it,” Graves said.

Please don't confuse the gun control freaks with facts.
I'm thinking we may be looking at an 'Assault' gun ban again in the near future along with restrictions on magazine capacity. My main problem with that is who gets to decide exactly what an 'Assault' gun is. I always thought it meant a gun capable of firing in 'Burst' or 'Automatic' mode, but of course they are already severely restricted for the civilian population.
So are they talking about 'Semi-Automatic' guns ???
If so more than half of the shelves at the gun shops will be empty.

Well then we all will just have to switch to 8 SHOT S&W Revolver.

There is no known relationship between factual information and the mainstream media.

Yeah well, I'm a wheel man anyway, much easier when you do your own reloading.

This subject will be driven by big govt anti-liberty types in the vehicle of emotion because facts don't support their desires.

Crime - including gun crimes - are down over the last 6 years.

Murder of children is down 40+%, only 1% of childhood deaths occur at school.

Multi-victim shooting is about the same rate in the US as it is in those "etherial" gun ban countries.

Some of the worst gun violence has occurred in countries that have the strictest gun laws.

And the question has to be answered why these killings keep happening in gun free zones. Schools, no gun movie theaters, churches.

~~Hell Yes ,but only the one they think are looking dangerous to the ignorant.Do a search on a Remington 7600 or a Browning BAR both are semi auto rifles .but the aren't built like the AR with the pistol girp . they don't replicate the military arms, contrary to common sense these people believe looks kill . If looks like a assualt rifle (machinegun) then it has to be called one.Back in the late 80s when they pushed for the AWB 27news did a report witha PSP officer in thebackground shooting a real assualt rifle full/ select fire. they didn't knowe any different and thus helped convince the john doe dumb arse these were fully auto. i did make a cll to the station and it was pulled . Since the first ban the anti have tried their hardest to create a dual assualt weapon discription . the full auto/select fire machingun assualt rifle and the semi auto assualt rifle. Understand assualt rifles shoot single or 3 shot bursts otr fully auto, meaning as long as you hold the trigger back it will run untill the mags empty. A Semi Auto fire one time ea time you pull the trigger just as any other rifle. look alike clones for the civilian market. Fully auto guns have been restricted since 1939 and back around the time of the first AWB they are no longer even available to the civilian market only police. Those still out there can be sold transfered etc . only with a FEDERAL TAX STAMP a $200 fee and truck load of paper work and a few months wait while your throughly ck'd out. Very few gun shop even hold the license to do these type transfers. Aslso as you would imagine they don't come cheap. I get so tired of the media hype feeding the ignorant masses. feel free to share this with your confused friends

Assault gun look alikes seem to be the rage, Crosman makes a multi-pump pellet gun that looks like an M-4. Although it's mostly plastic from a distance of 25 yards the average Joe wouldn't be able to tell the difference.

Ask Timothy McVeigh how many guns he needed. Oh, sorry, he's busy burning in hell.

Better yet, let's discuss Chicago:

There were 192 shootings in Chicago throughout the month of November - a 49 percent increase from a year earlier - according to police records obtained by the Chicago Tribune.

In November of 2011, Chicago recorded 129 shootings compared to the 192 shootings this November. Police records also reveal that shootings increased more than 11 percent in the first 11 months of 2012 compared with a year earlier.

Total homicides in Chicago rose to 480 for the first eleven months of 2012; a 21 percent increase from last year. On November 30, 2012, there were four fatal shootings within the city. These murders brought the homicide total to 38 for the month, just above the 37 recorded in November of last year.

Despite having some of the strictest gun laws in the country, Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel plans on restricting gun ownership further by banning individuals with a violent misdemeanor conviction from getting a gun permit for five years. The mayor also hopes to ban convicted felons from ever owning a gun. Emanuel's intentions are no doubt well intentioned, but like many cities with strict gun laws, the disarming of law-abiding citizens doesn't remove guns from the hands of those who wish to do harm. On the contrary, it often leaves innocent victims vulnerable to criminals.

CNSNews.com previously reported that a gun-rights group said that Mayor Emanuel bears some responsibility for the murder rate because of the strict gun-control laws there:

"Rahm Emanuel has some blood on his hands," said Alan Gottlieb, chairman of the Citizens Committee for the Right to Keep and Bear Arms, in a statement.

"He and the city council have done everything possible to prevent law-abiding Chicago residents from exercising their restored Second Amendment rights in the two years since the Supreme Court's landmark McDonald ruling."

In June 2010, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled 5-4 against a handgun ban in the city of Chicago in McDonald v. Chicago.

Four days later however, the Chicago City Council adopted the Responsible Gun Owners Ordinance. This requires prospective gun owners to take a firearm safety course at a gun range in order to obtain a permit to own a gun in a home. The city also placed a virtual ban on gun ranges.

The Citizens Committee for the Right to Keep and Bear Arms says that the Chicago City Council has been blocking Chicagoans from obtaining handguns and range-training; the result being that law-abiding citizens are left defenseless.

Guns are for all purposes banned in Chicago, try to get a permit ,unless ypour part of the thugs thst run the city or a close friend or relative it not very likely it gonna happen. The AWB was in effect b/4 and they procuted,i think it was 4 people .that why it was allowed to sunset ,it was a worthless peice of legislation.
