Cats aren't so cuddly to birds and small mammals

Apparently it doesn't matter how cute those cat videos are on YouTube or Facebook. Cats are dangerous predators.

They take out an average of 2.4 billion birds and 12.3 billion mammals a year — and that's just in the United States.

Not your Tigger?

http://lanctalk.com/Forums/index.php/topic/161884-cats-arent-so-cuddly-to-birds-and-small-mammals/

Think again, says a report released Wednesday by nature communications.

The report states pet cats that spend part of the day outdoors and strays and feral cats that never go indoors kill two to four times more birds and mammals than previously thought. That's enough to put them on the IUCN's list of the world's top 100 invasive alien species. The report says that more birds and mammals are killed by cats than from vehicles, pesticides and poisons, collisions with skyscrapers and windmills and other human-introduced causes. How exactly do they know how many are killed after running into skyscrapers and windmills?

Why is this study important? Because someone needed the numbers in order to stir the debate of what to do with free-roaming (feral) domestic cats, which the study says account for the bulk of the wildlife slaughter.

Environmentalists see feral cats as an invasive species. Animal rights folks want to neuter and spay the cats and return them to their colonies, where they will eventually die out, according to an article in the New York Times.

~~I've seen this first hand on my property~ the Game Comm is to protect all wildlife, why is it they have been allowing the TNR programs that have been wiping out the small game and song birds? It against thier codes and policy. ~~
§ 322. Powers and duties of commission.
(a) Duties.--It shall be the duty of the commission to
protect, propagate, manage and preserve the game or wildlife of
this Commonwealth and to enforce, by proper actions and
proceedings, the laws of this Commonwealth relating thereto.~~~
that being said they should put a $5.00 bounty on feral cats. I posted a yr or so ago about the cat lover are not animal lovers just cat lovers . If they really cared about all animals they would not be releasing these natural killers to the wild once trapped.I got emails and replies calling me every name in the book ,Would make a salior blush all from these sweet little kitty savers. guess the truth hurt., All the news stations carried this in the last week .but seemed like eveytime I hit a link that was days old it came up out dated ???

It's good to know that I saved some birds and small mammals last week when I ran over a cat.

You know how some people act when they're walking through a parking lot and they walk right in front of your moving car, knowing you'll stop for them? Well, that's what this cat did. Just calmly, slowly walked into my lane on a residential street, and I decided he wasn't worth putting any wear on my brake pads for.

It saddens me to see a cat that was hit, any animal really, but cats do push the envelope. At least the squirrels & chipmunks are slick enough to get missed.

~~Squirrels freak out and ziz zag all over the place i swerved to miss a squirrel one day and the dumb arse zigged the wrong way and got squished. Weren't my fault, I'd rather shoot 'em and eat 'em than run over 'em.

I have my own special way of neutering FERAL CATS, and they stop eating instantly. Did I mention I love moving targets.
