A coach known for cultivating a strong defense on the football field now has family fighting a tough two-prong offensive strategy off the field, hoping to win back his legacy.

First, on Sunday morning the Paterno family released their response to Louis Freeh's conclusion that Joe Paterno hid sex abuse allegations against Jerry Sandusky.

Joe's son, Jay Paterno, spent most of Monday speaking out to media outlets.

During an interview with ESPN he said, "Joe said to me, 'If I would have known anything that was in that presentment back in 2001, I certainty would have done something differently.' But we didn't know that, and you certainly can't judge people based on what they didn't know at the time."

Also on Monday, a special aired on the Katie Couric show in which Sue Paterno publicly spoke about her late husband for the first time since the scandal broke. She spent most of the interview defending Joe's character and ethics.

Penn State students and community members mostly said they were eager to hear from Sue and the rest of Joe's family, including senior Germel Ford, who said he continues to be a huge Joe Paterno fan.

"All the way I respect Joe Paterno," he said, "At the end of the day, the whole story was to go to your boss, and Joe went to his boss and nothing else happened, we can't put the blame on Joe."

Others said they were curious as to just how much about Jerry Sandusky's abuse Joe knew about.

"The damage is obviously done, but, if I found out that he didn't know, I don't know," said Samantha Linsk, Penn State student.

We anticipated the interview on Katie Couric show ,But found it as so so. We think this whole deal may be with us on a daily basis for 3 or more years
