Why is it that anytime somebody near you sneezes, you have to say either "bless you" or "gesundheit"? This morning I was in a grocery store, and a lady standing near me sneezed. I didn't say anything. She gave me a dirty look, so I said "gesundheit". Then she was happy and said "thank you".

 We all say bless you here at work. It's suppose to keep you from sneezing again, but it don't.

I'm not a Medic but I had heard that when one sneezes, their heart stops for a split second, hence the Salutations.

Just what I've ben told. We got any Med peoplke here to confirm or deny this? How about you, Vic?? I once heard that you were a proctologist??? ( just making a joke- nothing personal)

Also, if somebody sneezes and you say "bless you", and then they sneeze again, you have to say "bless you" more emphatically.
"Achoo!"
"Bless you!"
"Achoo!"
"BLESS YOU!!!"

This thread makes me chuckle. I thought the same about 2 months ago (why do we say that?), and stopped saying it. I've been waiting for my wife to ask why but she hasn't yet. It is just a habit that we have gotten into.

A friend of mine sneezes 3 times, then a pause, then a 4th sneeze. EVERY TIME. On rare occassions, the 4th one doesn't happen, so we're always listening for it.

It's just part of the 'old school' of good manners which has been slowly disappearing from our society for the past several decades. When I was coming up if I didn't say 'thank you' every time someone did anything for me, such as holding a door open, then I was in big trouble when we got home.
Times sure have changed, unfortunately mostly not for the better.

If the the 4th one doesn't happen, you should make sure she's OK. Remember, her heart just stopped 3 times.

We usually just ask if she's done.
